That summer Perkins, Bill Parcells, and Bill Belichick stayed at the same hotel near the Giants compound. There was some talk of Belichick eventually helping out Parcells on the defense. But then, one day, Parcells asked Belichick to drive him to the airport because, as he said, things weren’t working out. He was going back to Colorado. He had, he said, become too much of a football gypsy over the previous fifteen years, had made too many moves in too short a time, and his wife and daughters were objecting. They did not want to be uprooted again; they loved living in Colorado Springs; his daughters liked the schools there, and they did not want to move east. Parcells lived in Colorado for a year, mostly out of the game. He was so miserable and so willing to share his misery with the rest of his family that Judy Parcells eventually surrendered; one more move was better than a husband that unhappy, and she said she would move east. With that he returned to coaching.
The turnaround of the Giants took seven years, and by the time it happened Bill Parcells had become the head coach, and Ray Perkins had gone back to Alabama to take the one job that would lure him away from the Giants: replacing Bear Bryant at Alabama. The one former Alabama player who seemed more than any other to reflect Bryant’s singular toughness in this new era was Perkins. There had been a moment early on in his Giant years when he had invited several of the beat reporters to his home, and Dave Klein of the Newark Star-Ledger had asked him, What would happen if the Alabama job became open in a few years, and they called you and offered it to you? He had answered, “I’d walk to Tuscaloosa for it.”
